As the Summer draws closer, so does your move-in date – and moving out of your family home, into student accommodation, can be a daunting time. We’ve put together a handy to-do list for you to check off over the Summer months, so you can ensure you’re completely organised before you head off to university!
Sort out your documents
Before you even start packing, make sure all your documents are in order. This includes:
- Your accommodation contract or tenancy agreement
- University admission letter
- Any financial documents, such as student loan details
- Insurance for your belongings – we partner with Endsleigh so you can get this for FREE!
Keep both physical and digital copies, and store them in a folder you can easily access during the move.
Create a packing list
It’s easy to forget essentials when you’re packing for a new life. Break your list into categories:
- Bedding: duvet, pillows, sheets, mattress protector
- Kitchen: cutlery, plates, mugs, pots, pans, Tupperware
- Toiletries: towels, shower caddy, toothbrush, shampoo, etc.
- Study Supplies: laptop, notebooks, pens, folders
- Clothing: everyday wear, formal clothes, seasonal items
Don’t forget chargers, extension leads, laundry supplies, and a few home comforts like photos or fairy lights to personalise your room.
Coordinate with flatmates if possible
If you’re moving into shared accommodation, try to get in touch with your future flatmates ahead of time. You can coordinate who brings what for shared spaces like the kitchen or lounge, helping avoid duplicates and saving money. Facebook groups and university forums are good places to connect.
Plan your move-in day
Confirm your move-in date and time with the accommodation office. Plan your route, book transport if needed (especially if you have large items), and make sure someone is available to help you unload if necessary. Label your boxes for easier unpacking.
Buy essentials early
Some basics like kitchen utensils or cleaning supplies can be picked up once you arrive, but it’s smart to purchase harder-to-find or essential items in advance, especially if you won’t have access to a car. Think about what might sell out quickly during student move-in season, or anything specific to you like medications, your favourite local snacks or something else.
Get familiar with your new area
Before move-in day, spend some time researching the area around your accommodation. Find out where the nearest grocery stores, doctors, and public transport stops are. This will make the first few days much less stressful.
Prepare mentally and emotionally
Moving out for the first time can feel daunting. It’s okay to feel nervous. Talk to friends or family who’ve been through it, make a plan to stay in touch with loved ones, and remind yourself that everyone else is figuring things out too.
With this checklist in hand, you’ll be well on your way to settling into student life smoothly. Take it one step at a time, and don’t forget to enjoy the journey – this is the beginning of an exciting new chapter!
