Moving to a new city for university is exciting – but it can also feel overwhelming. Between unpacking boxes, navigating campus, and adjusting to student life, it’s easy to overlook one major part of your new chapter: getting to know the city you now call home.
Whether you’re moving into our Hereford or Gloucester student accommodation, here are some practical tips to help you feel more connected, confident, and at home in your new city.
Explore on foot (or bike)
One of the best ways to learn your surroundings is simply to wander. Walk around your local area without a set destination. Pay attention to nearby cafes, supermarkets, parks, and public transport links. Download apps like Citymapper or Google Maps to help you find your way back to base.
If you fancy it, and feel safe doing so, why not cycle around? It’s a bonus way to stay fit, and you might be able to pick up a cheap (or even free) bike on an online/social media marketplace if you don’t already own one.
Use public transport early on
Understanding the city’s public transport systems early will help you navigate like a local. It also means if you need to use public transport in an emergency later down the line, you’ll know exactly what to do – relieving some stress! Learn how to get to the city centre, your campus buildings, and any essential spots like hospitals or train stations. Look into any discounted tickets or passes you might be eligible for, to help protect your student budget…
Join student societies and city events
Many student societies organise city tours, social events, or local outings – perfect for meeting people and exploring at the same time. Also keep an eye out for city events like food markets, festivals, and free exhibitions. Social media, or websites like Eventbrite, can help you find what’s going on near you.
Talk to locals (and long-term students)
Nobody knows a city better than those who live there! Chat with local shopkeepers, your accommodation staff, or older students. Ask for their favorite spots to eat, shop, or relax. You’ll often discover hidden gems that don’t appear in online guides – and they’ll likely be much quieter than the places everybody knows about…
Try one new place each week
Whether it’s a new café, a museum, or a scenic park, challenge yourself to explore one new place every week. This builds familiarity gradually and helps make the city feel more like yours. You could even keep a list or create a photo diary of all the places you’ve explored. One of the best parts of being a student is getting away from your home town for a couple of years; make the most of this opportunity to explore somewhere new!
Use social media wisely
Follow local Instagram accounts or TikTok creators who share content about your city. You’ll often find recommendations, event news, and even student discounts. Reddit or Facebook student groups are also great places to ask for advice and connect with others in your area. Just be sure to stay safe online, and don’t give away any personal information.
Give it time
Most importantly, don’t worry if the city doesn’t feel like home straight away. Feeling settled takes time, and it’s perfectly normal to feel lost or lonely at first. The more you get out there, the more your confidence will grow. Homesickness as a student is incredibly common, so don’t feel like it’s just you who might struggle to fall in love with your new city.
Your university years are about more than just lectures – they’re about building a life in a new place. By taking small, intentional steps to get to know your new city, you’ll not only make the most of your student experience but also create memories that last long after graduation.
So go ahead: get out, get curious, and make your new city yours.
